Last time… I finished by talking a little about Shimano CALCUTTA CONQUEST 301.

In the shadow of the CALCUTTA CONQUEST300, the CALCUTTA CONQUEST400 has not received much attention.
But this one… The body is the same as the “CALCUTTA CONQUEST 300” (weight is only 10g different), but the spool is wider by +8.5mm.
It is also equipped with an interlocking level winder to reduce line release resistance…
As a mid-size baitcasting model equipped with Shimano's latest technology , it is currently the only one and only wide spool type.
(Compared to the Grappler 301, the spool width is 5.5mm wider.)
So, I quickly made a prototype! It is the “Calcutta Conquest 401 (magnetic brake version).

Outstanding stability and maneuverability, totally awesome reel!I cast several times, and when the line had adjusted to the seawater, I made a full cast.
The lure (PE line #3) flies very well.
And then, as if… nothing important happened… the water landed quietly.
It was too easy! Long cast !
What’s this…, it’s so easy…, the line is as stable as if it were attached to the spool…”
Then, while fine-tuning the magnets, again and again! Over and over! I tried throwing it, but… the result was the same.
What if this reel was equipped with a lightweight, high-performance shallow spool with the same amount of take-up as the CALCUTTA CONQUEST 300? With just that, the Calcutta Conquest 401 will easily outperform the CALCUTTA CONQUEST 301 and the GRAPPLER 301. It's not just that... I think it can become a real "high performance bait reel" that is easy to use for everyone.
And for that specific reason…
(I dare not mention the moment of inertia of the “narrow spool” this time…!)
- Even if the release resistance of a thick thread (PE 2.5 to 3) is the same, the wider the spool, the more gradual the increase or decrease in thread (change in the thickness of the thread wound on the spool).
This means that spool control is easier and more stable than narrow spools, which are subject to rapid changes in spool conditions.
- And… if you were to throw the lure 100 meters (actually, you can!) The speed of the lure reeling in from the landing point is not extremely slow, but accelerates slowly until just before it is picked up… and then it is retrieved.
- With a thin spool, the speed at the start of the retrieve and just before the end of the retrieve varies greatly, affecting the “speed of the lure’s rise” and the “constant speed of the retrieve.
- Furthermore, when casting a lure at the same distance, the spool speed of the narrow spool is equal to that of the wide spool of the same diameter at the time of casting (initial speed), but the spool speed just before landing on the water is not lower than that of the wide spool.
The result? Summing the landing is very difficult because of the large impact of the water landing.
- On the other hand, a wide spool has the same initial speed, but the rotation speed drops slowly (due to less change in thread diameter) and the shock of landing on the water is gentle.
- Narrow spools, which spin at a high rate until the very end, have a low tolerance for changes in the behavior of the lure (during flight)… so they tend to have peaky reel characteristics.
- The lighter and higher performance a wide shallow spool is, the better it can handle light lures and thin lines, and the more stable its performance will be.
I believe that the Calcutta Conquest 401, an excellent bait reel, is the one that needs a highly rigid and lightweight shallow spool (custom made) for its application.
It could be a super reel that can be used for a wide range of fishing, from big baits, surf, rockfish, shore jigging, boat casting games, super light jigging, to jigging...?
If Shimano (at Yumeya) could provide a shallow spool capable of spooling 230m to 240m of No. 3 or No. 2.5 PE, we could complete the (O’Shea)CALCUTTA CONQUEST 401 saltwater PE specification and have even more fun fishing…
(If your request can be fulfilled, it would be best if you could increase the gear ratio a bit and make the maximum rewind speed about 96cm! (laughs)
Why 230-240m?
I do not wrap the main line 100% around the spool.
The reason is that you need a line capacity that can hold the bottom winding, the main line (about 200m) and a long shock leader.

This modification of the magnetic brake was a great learning experience for me.
